Project Aims
The Access and Conservation Project aims to raise £886,500 to provide easy access to the priory for everyone- casual visitor, tourist, worshipper, concert-goer, schools and special interest groups.
What will the money pay for?
• Laying paths to the priory and monastic precinct with gentle slopes to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
• Building a porch in the ruined north aisle to act as a secondary entrance to the church with a door at floor level.
• Providing a service building containing toilets, a display area and refreshment point.
• Conserving the medieval gatehouse and precinct wall as a dramatic entry point to the priory.
• Placing information panels around the site and displaying artefacts in the church.
Cost of the Project
The overall project budget is £886,500 made up as follows:
• £327,800 for conservation of the gatehouse, precinct wall, 12th century wall base in the north aisle and the remains of the 14th century buttresses.
• £476,600 for new paths, a secondary entrance to the church and the service building containing toilets, display area and refreshment point.
• £82,100 for information panels, displays, literature, website, and research on the artefacts not previously investigated from early archaeological excavations.
Financing the Project
Of the £886,500 needed, £158,000 has already been raised or promised.The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded this project a grant of £648,500.This Regional Appeal is for the £80,000 still to be raised.
Associated organisations
The overall design of the project has received formal approval from the Diocese of Norwich, English Heritage and North Norfolk District Council, together with support from Binham Parish Council, Binham Local History Group, Norfolk Landscape Archaeology,The Archbishops'Council for the Care of Churches and The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings
The project is being managed by Binham Priory Trust and The Norfolk Archaeological Trust in partnership.
