“Celestial Songs”

Music by Schubert, Fauré, Mendelssohn, Elaine Hagenberg, Darius Lim, Bob Chilcott, Victoria, Lauridsen, Forbes, Tavener

Serenata is delighted to be invited to perform a multilingual programme of celestial songs by composers and lyricists across the ages and from around the globe at Binham Priory on 25th April. Conducted by Andrew Foxley, Serenata is a vibrant choir of women from the East of England who love to sing music arranged for female voices in rich harmony.  This concert follows closely on from performances of our springtime repertoire in Spain at Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia and Girona Cathedral. Our celestial themes encompass sacred and secular pieces from Forbes’ lovely arrangement of Ave Maria and John Taverner’s exquisitely intimate and spine-tingling setting of William Blake’s The Lamb to eclectic musical evocations of sun, moon, stars and light with the poignant poetry of Sarah Teasdale and the dynamic and dramatic Lady of the Evening Star from Singapore-based composer and conductor Darius Lim.

Sunday 24 May 3pm

Suffolk Singers

Claire Weston, music director

“In Sweet Music”

Music by Palestrina, Bruckner, Albinoni, Poulenc, Moses Hogan, Arnesen and Hagenberg.

Suffolk Singers, a renowned ‘a capella’ choir, are delighted to return to Binham Priory to give a recital on Sunday 24th May at 3pm.  The programme is an eclectic mix of sacred and secular works celebrating the enduring power of the human voice, from the luminous polyphony of the Renaissance to the rich, expressive music of modern composers. We will be singing well-known choral anthems including Bruckner’s Ave Maria and Palestrina’s Exsultate Deo and we are very excited to perform a version of Albinoni’s much-loved Adagio, which has been set to the words of Ave Maria and arranged especially for Suffolk Singers by Jamie John Hutchings. American composer and arranger Moses Hogan brings a different spiritual dimension to the programme through his powerful arrangements of music that draw on the legacy of African American sacred song, offering both exuberant energy and profound emotional resonance. On a lighter note, the programme includes an arrangement of ‘My love is like a red,red rose’ and two Shakespearean songs which capture the charm and elegance of Victorian part-song writing. The programme reaches into the 21st century with the contemporary voice of Elaine Hagenberg and the modern harmonic language of Kim André Arnesen. We will be performing Three Antiphons of Hildegard of Bingen, written for the choir by Jamie John Hutchings, demonstrating that choral music continues to evolve while remaining deeply connected to its past.

This is a ticketless event and a retiring collection will be taken.
Afternoon tea is available before the concert at The Parlour, adjacent to Binham Priory. Booking is essential.

Summer Series 2026

Saturday 18th July 6pm

Norwich Baroque

“Flights of Fancy: exuberant music from the 17th century”

Castello, Kapsberger, Mayone, Schmeizer, Ucellini, Lambardi, Mealli, Piccinini, Bertal

In the turbulent decades of the early 17th century, European composers threw off the restraints of Renaissance polyphony and embraced a thrilling new world of expressive freedom. This programme gathers some of the era's most inventive voices — Castello's mercurial sonatas, Kapsberger's luminous theorbo textures, Schmelzer's earthy and celestial violin writing, and Piccinini's mesmerising variations on the ancient folia — into a single, vivid journey through the birth of the Baroque. Dramatic, passionate, and unapologetically fantastical, this is music that still astonishes four centuries on.
